Mod note on 'Charlie Kirk shot at event in Utah'
adrienneleigh: "....there's at least one person stalking this thread and screencapping it to make threatening posts on Twitter."
The board was made aware of that at the same time you were, adrienneleigh, and has reached out to the member for clarification. In the meantime, that comment has been removed.

nobody_truncates: "i guess our duty as commenters on metafilter.com is to remember to renounce security by obscurity, assume the couchfucker's pie-in-the-sky doxxing dragnet is actually real, and make ourselves clear:"
This entire comment has been removed for the moment while I talk it over with other mods and the current board.
The comment was by one member, who was drawing a line in the sand not only for themselves, but tof the entire site as what could and would be said Charlie Kirk. That's a personal choice and as I see it, pending talking with other mods and the current board, not the sort of comment we should just leave up at the moment.
nobody_truncates and other members, please refrain from these types of comments until we can decide as a site if and how we wish to host them, and if so, how to handle potential demands that we remove such comments. In the meantime such comments will be removed.
Thanks for everyone's patience as we figure things out.

Two comments made by DeepSeaHaggis have been removed and the user placed on an indefinite ban. The comments celebrated Kirk's death and also advocated for the death of Kirk's family and friends. That violates several parts of the Content Policy and possibly laws, so we're skipping warnings in this instance and going straight to a ban. It's only indefinite due to a single moderator being on duty and making the decision, I'll confer with the other moderators over the next couple of days about whether the ban should be permanent (I firmly think it should be, but it's best if there's agreement for permanent bans).
If folks wish to discuss this action further, please make a post in MetaTalk or you can ask the Moderation Oversight Committee to review this mod action.

phunniemee: "Well, posts to the blue require a link. I assume that the link that has apparently been removed (used to be we changed those to example.com, guess that changed) had something more obvious in it."
Yeah, the usual procedure is as phunniemee described, change the url of a spammy link to example.com. But in this case, the link was just raw unlinked html (https://metafilter.com as opposed to metafilter). So removing that unlinked html text removed any indication of where the link was.
In those situations in the future, we'll leave a note indicating the html/link was removed

Mod note on 'Threadsitting, and Implications for future moderation'
To me it sounds like someone realizes that they created more of problem for themselves than they intended and are now asking for the discussion to move on without them. Seeing at they've cited fears of harassment, it would be totally fine to do that. There's no need to demand that they must participate, nor that we focus on them.
Finally, it's important to note that harassment of another member is strictly forbidden and anyone experiencing should let the mods know and we'll deal with it.

The Pluto Gangsta: "Brandon, as long as you're here do you want to comment on why, when other comments were modded out of that thread, the mod didn't name the poster even when they quoted the comment, but you decided to reproduce not only my comment but to put me on blast specifically? Kinda feel like you put a target on my back there."
There are 5 official mod comments in that thread (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), 4 of them by me, 3 of which use the MeFi Quote feature to name who made the comments. You are not specifically being called out, it's just a function of being on the internet and the convenience of using MeFiQuote.
Otherwise, am going to leave the mod comment as is and request that everyone avoid bringing up The Pluto Gangsta anymore in this thread. It's not a command, just a request on their behalf.
About larger questions:
Mods should moderate comments and situations as they normally do on the site, with little regard as whether a person is a board member or not. There are probably hypotheticals where board status might matter, but I view that more as sending a message with advice or about some site history, but that's about it. Moderation should proceed as on escalating scale that starts with talking and requests and only moving on to ban if nothing else works. Definitely worth considering how to work out a such a situation if things go that way. But having to go that route will be a rare thing is my guess. Still worth considering ahead of time, IMO.

Sure, the full comment was "He was a nazi. The only good nazi is a dead nazi." That comment was in reference Charlie Kirk and went a little over the line, in terms of advocating for his death. I should have made that clearer in the deletion note.

The Pluto Gangsta: "Why is a candidate for the board being allowed to drag this thread into a bunch of derails? Is it because they're a board candidate? Is that why they're getting the kid gloves treatment?"
Hey, this is major derail, so we've removed the comment. But here's a few notes about the concerns that you've posted, emailed, and left flag notes about:
To wit: Candidate statements for 2025 Board election of the MetaFilter Community Foundation (MeFiCoFo), will be posted on this Friday, Sept 12 in the a.m. (ET). You (and anyone else) are encouraged to bring up this concern with the candidate at that time.
Otherwise, the flags on their comments in this thread have been reviewed and found to be ok in the context of a larger discussion about political violence. For here you're welcome to take this MetaTalk or file a request for review with the Moderation Oversight Committee .
Otherwise please refrain from continuing this derail as it may cause further comment removals and/or requests that you leave this thread.

Screenshots of the error would be best, but lacking that, a note would be fine, be it email or a MeTa post, just so we can tell if something is going on for a lot of people or just a few. I don't see an error recorded for the glitches you mention paduasoy.
But I am currently just using the free version UptimeRobot, the paid version of Cloudflare no doubt has more robust monitoring. I don't have access to that yet, frimble is working on getting me access, not current eta on that.

One comment removed due to simply writing "Lots of opinions on this".
The way AskMe works is that people ask concrete question and get (hopefully) concrete answers or suggestions about a problem they're having. Writing "lots of opinions on this" does not help the OP by offering any actual advice or solution, it's just a vague opinion. It's true, sure, people do have various opinions about the question, but that's not the sort of answer we want to encourage on AskMe.
So please try to help the OP by sharing your knowledge or information about the specific question they're having, thanks!

Ryvar: "If your personal commitment to truth lies well below your anger and need for easy answers... then you may not be a Nazi yet but you've placed yourself in a state of mind where you can be manipulated in a similar fashion."
Ryvar, this is the type of comment, where you essentially call people stupid or easily manipulated, isn't conducive to discussion, so don't do that.
You are not being forced to participate in these discussions obviously (no one is). So please consider whether your comments add anything to the discussion as name calling overrides any point you are trying to make and brings the level of discussion down.
Case in point:
TheWhiteSkull: "You know what, Ryvar? Having just re-read your last comment, particularly the bit about "truthiness," actually just fuck off."
Calling people names just devolves the conversation till it becomes about fighting or telling people to fuck off. Which MetaFilter actively discourages, so please knock it off, it usually just starts a fight or makes it worse.
To everyone, remember you're talking to people, so aim to be respectful, even in heated conversations or when disagreeing. It's ok to walk away from a discussion that's turning ugly.

ashbury: "Why is MetaTalk so lightly moderated? Why does this policy, such as it, exist? Does it have to exist the way it currently is used? Can't it change? Why hasn't a mod stepped in here to tell everybody to cool it?
I'm not just shouting these question into the void - these are real questions and I would actually like some answers from a mod."
MetaTalk has a long tradition of being lightly moderated, with the belief it's the place for members to say exactly what they want. I think this policy and MeTa were put in place to give members a place on the site to truly vent as opposed to doing so in threads on the front page or Ask.
I believe we talked briefly in a past MeTa about moderating this subsite more like the main site and at the time people were heavily against it is my recollection. But there's no reason why things can't change and if someone wants to make a new MeTa about that, go for it. Talking about it here at the bottom of a thread with a different subject (declining stats) probably won't get as many eyeballs.

Yeah and that's the point. People are stressed in general these daysand may have other things going on in their lives and someone's comment on the site comes off as an attack might be their final straw. Sure, it wasn't intended, but that's besides the point now. It's been said and regardless of intention feelings were hurt.
We could all do with taking a moment to breath and consider what we want to do with our comments on the site. Because like it or not, they can hurt or come off the wrong way, even when someone doesn't mean them to and that just adds more anger to a situation.
We could all use less anger in our lives and on the site.

Their profile indicates their only activity here site-wide, this one comment, upthread. I don't get it; seems like a mighty harsh reaction to a first comment. UNLESS this MeFite is/was actually somebody else, with another history? How do you know?"
As hinted at by their comment, that new account was made a by a person who had previously been banned for being transphobic.

toodleydoodley: "Forex partner & I recently watched the documentary West of Memphis and their takeaway, which I agree with, is: You just canโt let people be that poor."
toodleydoodley, the article is about Japan, yet you're consistently making arguments from a western perspective based on your western experiences.
Please stop doing that and give the thread a break. For everyone else ready this, please leave the US, the west and other countries out of your comments. Again, the article is about Japan, so commenting as someone who doesn't live in the country or have a lot of experience with its culture in terms of religion and child abuse is speaking from a place of blind ignorance.
Some comments have been removed based on the above rationale.
Mod note on 'India Bans Online Gambling Apps'
Another comment removed for trying to argue when it's ok to bring up the USA in threads that are not about the USA.
There's a long history on MeFi about the USA being injected or brought up in threads where it's not mentioned or the subject of the thread.
You'd like to comment in this thread, please make it about India and its ban of online gambling apps. Folks are welcome to agree or disagree about this new law, but please make it India related.

That's fine, but it is important to point out when mods are doing official things, they should be using the mod style aka the border around comments. If we aren't, it's totally fine to point that out.

Mod note on '25 films'
OP, i'd recommend changing the leading paragraph to the one from the article:
"Labor Day for me has always symbolized the importance of elevating the fight for gender equality in the work place, and also behind the camera. Here is a list of our top 25 films that show that, and where to watch them." Just so it's clearer what the link is about.

Mod note on 'Editorializing in the FPP'
I guess I am behind the times? Is editorializing ok now?
No, editorializing is not ok now. This particular post fell into a grey area, so we left it up under the guideline of "let people talk about what they want to talk about in almost every case" and kept an eye on it. The discussion was basically fine.
Others have already chimed in various suggestions or point, so no need to rehash them. Basically, post about stuff that interests you, the links should stand on their own, and avoid making a post about you or your thoughts/feelings on the subject.
tiny frying pan: "Which I always thought was kind of bizarre. There should be at least a 10 minute edit window, or a way to submit an edit easily to be fixed by mods."
There's a feature request for this (#6) on the list of feature requests for the new site. Folks can submit their own requests (or ponies) at this link.

Mod note on 'How to save your job if you're a billionaire who fails to deliver'
straw: "I have been saying for a while that the problem with people who blindly believe that the current crop of chatbots portending AI being "right around the corner" don't have enough interactions with developmentally disabled adults. That willingness to tell you "yes", the infodumping on things they've read or otherwise imbibed from their environment that's almost plausible, but absolute bullshit? These are patterns that anyone who's spent time in a group home, or around programs for those with developmental delays, or just hanging out with DD relatives, picks up on real fast.
"
Hi, please be careful about you categorize and write about other people. While I don't think you met this comment to be dismissive of people that are developmentally disabled, the comment did pick up a number of flags that very understandably took it that, so heads about writing about others: be respectful and avoid using them (whoever they are) are examples to prove a point of yours. Because you may be ruining your own point be unknowingly being offensive.

mahadevan: "URGENT: I don't know how else to spread this so posting here - someone can repost this as a new post to MeFI:"
Hey, just fyi MetaFilter isn't a site for "you must see this now, it's very important" aggressive type comments or posts, nor is it encouraged to ask people to post something for you. In fact, if a person is feeling that something must posted and/or as soon as possible, we advise you rethink that that line of thought before posting.
The comment was also off topic, meaning the thread is about AI/Sam Altman, but the comment was about Trump and the Smithsonian. Those two things aren't related.
So the comment has been deleted, for being a derail. Not a big deal, it's nothing personal! Just avoid posting offtopic comments in a thread, along with imploring others to make a post because you think it must be shared.
Deleted mefi post 'Smithsonian library tampered with'
MetaFilter post Smithsonian library tampered with deleted. MetaFilter is not a place for making posts about "urgent issues", particularly when they're as context free as this one.
If a person finds something interesting, by all means, post it! But making a post to simply say another member thinks this issue is important, so here's a post is not that. If you care about the issue, please provide a link or two telling us why it's interesting
