The Pluto Gangsta: "Why is a candidate for the board being allowed to drag this thread into a bunch of derails? Is it because they're a board candidate? Is that why they're getting the kid gloves treatment?"
Hey, this is major derail, so we've removed the comment. But here's a few notes about the concerns that you've posted, emailed, and left flag notes about:
To wit: Candidate statements for 2025 Board election of the MetaFilter Community Foundation (MeFiCoFo), will be posted on this Friday, Sept 12 in the a.m. (ET). You (and anyone else) are encouraged to bring up this concern with the candidate at that time.
Otherwise, the flags on their comments in this thread have been reviewed and found to be ok in the context of a larger discussion about political violence. For here you're welcome to take this MetaTalk or file a request for review with the Moderation Oversight Committee .
Otherwise please refrain from continuing this derail as it may cause further comment removals and/or requests that you leave this thread.
mecran01: "Kirk was sitting on a chair when he was shot.
My wife and I had just left the parking lot at UVU when we saw the UVU police screaming down the road on the north side of campus. Thanks for sharing that with us mecran01 and glad that everything is ok with your family.
Removed a comment saying "The only good nazi is a dead nazi" because site's Content Policy discourages calls for violence.
cooker girl: "At least he died doing what he loved: Demonizing transgender people.
posted by chasing at 5:23 PM on September 10
Fixed that for you."
chasing: "> cooker girl
Thanks for the correction. Didn't realize the other spelling was considered offensive and obviously wasn't intended that way.
(If a mod wants to edit my other post or something, go for it.)"
These two comments have been removed after cleaning up the original comment to change 'transgendered people' to 'transgender people'
One deleted. Let's keep this thread on topic please and refrain from making sweeping generalizations about populations of people doing horrific things/violence against children. Thanks.
One deleted, user's request.
MetaFilter post Charlie Kirk receives first-hand 2nd amendment experience deleted. newsfilter
Yup, definitely Newsfilter.
MetaFilter post Inside the World of "The Great British Bake Off" deleted. Double.
MetaFilter post Painting stolen by Nazis recovered in Argentina, ending 80-year mystery deleted. Double.
One deleted: duplicate comment.
Geez... Several comments deleted. Left some of the responses for context. Please refresh if needed. kschang, please take a step back and stop commenting on this thread. Genocide-denial doesn't have a place here on Metafilter, so please stop.
Two comments deleted as requested.
Multiple derailing comments removed. Folks stick to the subject and avoid starting side arguments about issues not relevant to the post.
MetaFilter post Yes, America has a Housing Emergency deleted. Post is too thin, just a single link to substack
MetaFilter post Graham Greene has left the building deleted. Double.
One removed at poster's request.
Derailing comment and several responses to it removed.
MetaFilter post "For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing." Jaws at 50 deleted. Double. We've already gotten that bigger boat
rpfields: "Yep, the story of Jila Tolentino's "family's slave" was one of the more shocking ones I've read over the past few years."
Author's name corrected to Jia and broken link fixed.
Ryvar: "If your personal commitment to truth lies well below your anger and need for easy answers... then you may not be a Nazi yet but you've placed yourself in a state of mind where you can be manipulated in a similar fashion."
Ryvar, this is the type of comment, where you essentially call people stupid or easily manipulated, isn't conducive to discussion, so don't do that.
You are not being forced to participate in these discussions obviously (no one is). So please consider whether your comments add anything to the discussion as name calling overrides any point you are trying to make and brings the level of discussion down.
Case in point:
TheWhiteSkull: "You know what, Ryvar? Having just re-read your last comment, particularly the bit about "truthiness," actually just fuck off."
Calling people names just devolves the conversation till it becomes about fighting or telling people to fuck off. Which MetaFilter actively discourages, so please knock it off, it usually just starts a fight or makes it worse.
To everyone, remember you're talking to people, so aim to be respectful, even in heated conversations or when disagreeing. It's ok to walk away from a discussion that's turning ugly.
MetaFilter post What is going on? deleted. The post is only 6 links with no context. Please review out article on What makes a good front page post to MetaFilter? and feel free to reach out to our team if you need assistance or guidance.
Text in post adjusted as requested. Please carry on.
One deleted: poster's request.
Working through thread, removing derailing comments about who should be shot and reactions to that. If you canβt resist such comments, we may need to give you some time off.
One double comment deleted
Changed "partner" to "husband" as requested.
Two comments from bombastic lowercase boatshoes are being flagged, the second has been removed as wishing violence on other people goes against our guidelines, so let's avoid proposing assassinations. That being said, there are legitimate forms of protest that involve violence against property (just not against other people) so the first comment has been left up.
Link changed at OP's request, one comment removed.
toodleydoodley: "Forex partner & I recently watched the documentary West of Memphis and their takeaway, which I agree with, is: You just canβt let people be that poor."
toodleydoodley, the article is about Japan, yet you're consistently making arguments from a western perspective based on your western experiences.
Please stop doing that and give the thread a break. For everyone else ready this, please leave the US, the west and other countries out of your comments. Again, the article is about Japan, so commenting as someone who doesn't live in the country or have a lot of experience with its culture in terms of religion and child abuse is speaking from a place of blind ignorance.
Some comments have been removed based on the above rationale.
Another comment removed for trying to argue when it's ok to bring up the USA in threads that are not about the USA.
There's a long history on MeFi about the USA being injected or brought up in threads where it's not mentioned or the subject of the thread.
You'd like to comment in this thread, please make it about India and its ban of online gambling apps. Folks are welcome to agree or disagree about this new law, but please make it India related.
Another comment removed, this time for adding for bringing up the USA in a thread about India.
Typo correction to post at poster's request.
One comment and a response removed for derailing the post.
OP, i'd recommend changing the leading paragraph to the one from the article:
"Labor Day for me has always symbolized the importance of elevating the fight for gender equality in the work place, and also behind the camera. Here is a list of our top 25 films that show that, and where to watch them." Just so it's clearer what the link is about.
ITravelMontana: "What?
Office Space?
Iβm not getting a direct connection here.
Or any connection."
To be clear, the phrase " This is what Office Space should have been" is a direct quote from the article about entry #22
Post edited per OP's request to do the following:
"The music industry shift could be big" - https://www.donga.com/en/article/all/20250722/5738818/1
"especially with AI in the picture." - https://www.cnn.com/style/kpop-virtual-bands-ai-intl-hnk
One deleted. Please remember some people want to have discussions about the threadβs subject with genuine curiosity and be mindful of what you are saying and how your comment adds to the thread.
Spam comment deleted; spammer banned.
One comment removed. Please don't show up in a thread about Scottish heritage to say Scotland is irrelevant. Be sensitive to context, as mentioned in the Guidelines.
Fixed misspelling in the title.
One comment removed as requested
straw: "I have been saying for a while that the problem with people who blindly believe that the current crop of chatbots portending AI being "right around the corner" don't have enough interactions with developmentally disabled adults. That willingness to tell you "yes", the infodumping on things they've read or otherwise imbibed from their environment that's almost plausible, but absolute bullshit? These are patterns that anyone who's spent time in a group home, or around programs for those with developmental delays, or just hanging out with DD relatives, picks up on real fast.
"
Hi, please be careful about you categorize and write about other people. While I don't think you met this comment to be dismissive of people that are developmentally disabled, the comment did pick up a number of flags that very understandably took it that, so heads about writing about others: be respectful and avoid using them (whoever they are) are examples to prove a point of yours. Because you may be ruining your own point be unknowingly being offensive.
mahadevan: "URGENT: I don't know how else to spread this so posting here - someone can repost this as a new post to MeFI:"
Hey, just fyi MetaFilter isn't a site for "you must see this now, it's very important" aggressive type comments or posts, nor is it encouraged to ask people to post something for you. In fact, if a person is feeling that something must posted and/or as soon as possible, we advise you rethink that that line of thought before posting.
The comment was also off topic, meaning the thread is about AI/Sam Altman, but the comment was about Trump and the Smithsonian. Those two things aren't related.
So the comment has been deleted, for being a derail. Not a big deal, it's nothing personal! Just avoid posting offtopic comments in a thread, along with imploring others to make a post because you think it must be shared.
MetaFilter post Smithsonian library tampered with deleted. MetaFilter is not a place for making posts about "urgent issues", particularly when they're as context free as this one. If a person finds something interesting, by all means, post it! But making a post to simply say another member thinks this issue is important, so here's a post is not that. If you care about the issue, please provide a link or two telling us why it's interesting
One comment removed for wishing death on others, which violates the Content Policy
One more comment removed, please avoid posting derails about nazi bars.
Three comments deleted. Let's try to be considerate and respectful towards other MeFites and avoid picking a fight with them; try to engage with the content of the video instead. But most importantly: "Avoid downplaying a problem just because it is not a problem for you." Telling someone to go touch grass when they are calling out transphobia is considered, at the very least, a microaggression.
One deleted. Please remember that threadsitting is discouraged.
OHenryPacey: "Good for Jessie for caring so much about the SW myth that he would make a 4 hour long video essay. "
Changed 'he' to 'she'
One comment and a response removed for being dismissive about the project.
MetaFilter post I know that this is exactly what they were looking for, but I can't help myself deleted. User request
One comment removed at the member's request
It's ok to not like Star Wars, Andor, Disney+, or even tv, but showing up in this thread to express all of that isn't necessary.
You're welcome and even encouraged to engage in a thread on a topic you do like, but let's avoid being down on something others are enjoying.
xdvesper: "Just some quick responses -"
xdvesper, go ahead and remove yourself from this thread. The subject is about shifting views of the Israeli government as they continue to commit genocide in Gaza. Coming in here to essentially say "no Israel is right" is not ok.
No comments deleted at this point, but there's no need for you to continue in this thread, so please move on.
One comment deleted. Let's avoid aggressive comments towards another member, Please keep the conversation focused on the subject rather than picking a fight with another user.
Lemkin, please avoid threadsitting and give others a chance to say something. There is no need reply to the various comments stating what's wrong with the information in the article.
One comment has been removed.
Minor fix to post phrasing on poster's request.
One comment deleted. Name calling is not acceptable and goes against our content policy.
HTML Fixed, the placeholder for the URL was a single dot. Added the full sentence now.
One deleted, poster's request.
MetaFilter post We won't be hearing from him anymore deleted. LLM Content
Please stop derailing the thread. If your comment is not about the thread's subject, or you are simply replying to other users to argue/snark, stop. Take a break from the thread.
Just a note that thread sitting is discouraged, so if you find yourself commenting more frequently than other users in the thread, please take a break and let others chime in as well.
MetaFilter post The New Vertigo Years deleted. self link
MetaFilter post On Weird America deleted. self link
xusifem: "Spinifex has an Indigenous land acknowledgement on their website and publishes books by Indigenous and lesbian authors on feminism, decoloniality, and anthropogenic climate change. I find that to be odd behavior for a right wing press."
As others noted, Spinifex's book of the week is Terf Island: How the UK Resisted Trans Ideology, which is a textbook definition of anti-trans, so stop trying to convince people that the Collective Shout and Spinifex has no problematic elements. This is not a request, just stop and if you feel you can't, then move on to another thread.
Proofs and Refutations: "Fuck off TERF"
MetaFilter is unapologetically pro -trans, but also has firm rules about saying 'fuck you' or similar to other members, so let's avoid doing this in the future.
If anyone wants to discuss any of this further, email or MetaTalk are your options, avoid continuing the derailing this thread.
No comments have been removed.
Added a couple of periods to the post at OP's request.
Typo correction of infrastructure
aintnolobos: "why be devastated when you can sell a book"
Derailing comment removed, working through the thread to remove similar comments. Discussion about the upcoming bookk from Kamala Harris can be found in this other thread.
A couple of comments deleted. Please avoid derailing the conversation by being combative with other users and let's focus the conversation around the subject at hand.
Deleted a duplicate comment.
Another comment removed, see previous mod note.
"Why are you deleting my comments but not his if you want to clean up the thread..."
Original comment removed, but here's a public response:
You can take your concerns to email or MeTa, but you need to stop derailing this thread.
No one is thinking less of you, certainly not me, but it's clear that another member would prefer not to interact with you, so please, just avoid interacting with them.
You're welcome to continue discussing the subject of this thread, but if you keep insisting on derailing it, we're going to have to ask you to leave the thread.
One derailing comment removed. ch1x0r, please just avoid replying to comments from kittens for breakfast, as the last interaction between y'all did not go well.
Both of y'all just move on and avoid derailing this thread, please.
Melismata: "Wow the trolls are out in full force today."
No comments have been removed, but calling other members names (trolls) does nothing to discussion on topic. Please engage with what people are actually saying, instead of focusing on your perceptions of them.
unearthed: "The United States is in dire existential crisis because one party wasn't perfect for too many people. Too many Americans require a lovely story and a happy ending - or they won't participate."
Just a reminder that the article isn't about the United States or its political parties specifically, so please avoid derailing into the topics.
No comments removed.
No deletions needed but, let's avoid a derail about HOAs.
A couple of comments deleted. While it's OK to criticizethe sources of this post, this is not the right place to criticize other members and complain about them.

Indeed, I think part of the point is that trump definitely isn't hung.
Just using this comment to point out that mocking male genital size is similar to mocking and judging physical aspects of women, so please choose your words with care. There's plenty of things to judge and mock President Trump without resorting to insults about dick size so let's try to avoid doing that going forward.
Several comments deleted. outgrown_hobnail's comments have been removed and they have been banned for a week. All replies have been left for context. Thank you for pushing back against this kind of Hateful and Insensitive comments. Calling homeless people βshitbirdsβ is unacceptable. Please refer to the very top of the Content Policy.
Also, letβs avoid. Turning this, and any US politics post into a relitigation of the past elections; let's focus on the issue at hand instead.

sickos haha yes dot jpg: "
stop making up guys to get mad at in the body of the FPP."
Lemkin: "Stop shitting in my thread."
Please keep criticisms about a post respectful and about the topic, not the person.
Likewise, if the OP wants to rebut something, keep it respectful, and remember that creating a post doesn't make you the decider on what comments can or should go in a post.
One comment removed at the member's request, turns out it was a fake rumor. Responses to the original comment have been left up for clarification.
ch1x0r: "Since you provide your location in your profile, I researched the housing status there."
As noted in the FAQ, do not publicly mention details from someone else's profile page unless you have explicit permission from the individual. Your comment has been removed.
Folks, don't go through another member's profile, and try to use that information in any way. Doing so can result in ban.
Removed one comment that was supposed to go in the Fox in the Library thread and its replies, please carry on.
One duplicated comment removed.
One comment removed at memberβs request.
DeepSeaHaggis, you've asked your question, members will respond if they choose to. There's no need to keep pushing.
Now, the article appears to be largely or entirely AI-generated, which technically falls within our content policy and the FAQ's etiquette. Since the thread is going mostly well and the topic itself concerns AI, we're allowing this thread to continue.
If you would want to discuss this particular stance about AI generated content feel free to open a MetaTalk post about it, we are open to refine our policies and, frankly will need to keep updating them as this technology develops and becomes more pervasive.
USpolitics tag added and post put in the sidebar widget

Didymus, you need to back and stop attacking EC, that's not what members should be doing to one other on MetaFilter and not something we want to encourage in any way. Focus on the subject of the thread or information and leave the personal out of your
One comment removed for linking to a USA case in a thread about UK. Please avoid including USA cases and/or info in threads about other countries, unless super relevant.
